What is a Student’s Pass?
A Student’s Pass is the official immigration authorisation issued by Singapore’s Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) that allows international students to legally reside in Singapore for their studies — equivalent to a student visa elsewhere.
All full-time international students at Newcastle Australia must obtain and maintain a valid Student’s Pass, which requires an online application, a health screening, and biometric registration with ICA.
What are the conditions of my Student’s Pass?
As a Student’s Pass holder, you are required to:
- Attend classes regularly and maintain at least 90% attendance
- Keep your residential address and contact details updated with the Institution and ICA
- Comply with all Student’s Pass conditions, including restrictions on employment
For the full list of Student’s Pass conditions, please refer to the ICA page.
Can I work in Singapore while studying?
- Employment & Internship Policy
Student’s Pass holders cannot undertake any paid or unpaid work or internships unless authorised by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM).Note: Classmates observed working are typically Singapore Citizens, Permanent Residents, or foreign nationals under different pass categories subject to different regulations.
- Students found working without the required authorisation may face a fine of up to S$20,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both.
- Before accepting any employment, internship or industrial attachment opportunity, please consult Newcastle Australia Institute of Higher Education and confirm the relevant MOM requirements.
Where can I find more information on the Student’s Pass?
You may visit the Becoming a Student’s Pass Holder page by ICA for more information.
We look forward to welcoming you to the Newcastle Australia Institute of Higher Education! This information will help you prepare for university life and living in Singapore.

Initial Finances
How much money should I bring to Singapore?
Bring enough funds to cover at least your first month of living expenses while you settle in and open a local bank account.
Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Consider using a travel money card, international bank transfer or reputable money-transfer app to manage funds in Singapore Dollars (S$).
Can I open a Singapore bank account before arriving?
Some banks, such as DBS and OCBC, may allow you to start the account-opening process online before arriving. Requirements vary, but you may need your passport, IPA Letter or Student’s Pass, Offer Letter and proof of Singapore address.
Please check directly with your preferred bank for current requirements.

Accommodation Information & Referral Service
Singapore Student Central offers an Accommodation Information and Referral Service to help newly enrolled international students explore housing options before arriving in Singapore.
Who Can Use This Service?
Newly enrolled international students relocating to Singapore for their studies.
How It Works
- Email Student Central at Singapore-StudentCentral@newcastle.edu.au with your name, Student ID, program, arrival date, and preferred accommodation type/budget.
- We’ll send you a list of recommended providers, indicative costs, and general guidance on renting in Singapore.
- Where appropriate, we may introduce you directly to a provider — from there, all arrangements (viewing, booking, payment, tenancy agreement) are made directly between you and the provider.
Apply early — ideally as soon as you’re enrolled — to give yourself enough time to secure housing before arrival.
Accommodation Types
- Co-Living: Private bedroom, shared common spaces, flexible leases
- Private Rental: HDB rooms, condo rooms, shared apartments, studio units
👉 FAQ: See “Do you have further information on the room rental?” for estimated price ranges.
Your Responsibility & Staying Safe
All accommodation arrangements are a private agreement between you and the provider. Before signing or paying anything:
- Verifying the provider is legitimate and get things in writing
- Ensure your rental contract meets Singapore’s legal minimum lease terms — 3 months for private property, 6 months for HDB/public housing
- Watch out for deals that seem too good to be true
👉 FAQ: See “How Can I Protect Myself from Accommodation Scams?”
Disclaimer
Newcastle Australia does not own, operate, manage, endorse, inspect, or guarantee any accommodation provider. All arrangements are a private contract between you and the provider — Newcastle Australia accepts no liability for accommodation availability, rental terms, payments, or disputes arising from these arrangements.
