The Purple Parade 2024: Celebrating Inclusivity

The Singapore Network for Inclusive Learning (SNIL), an initiative of the Newcastle Australia Institute of Higher Education, is composed of alumni and current students from the University of Newcastle, Australia’s Master of Special and Inclusive Education (MSIE) program. SNIL is dedicated to fostering transformative practices in inclusive education and building a global community where equitable opportunities are accessible to all.

As part of their Community of Practice, SNIL proudly participated in The Purple Parade 2024 Campaign, Singapore’s largest inclusive movement supporting the abilities of Persons with Disabilities. To kick off the campaign, SNIL hosted an inspiring event, Beyond Labels: A Journey of Connection and Understanding, followed by joining the Purple Parade Contingent March a week later.

Beyond Labels: A Journey of Connection and Understanding

On 4th October 2024, the event began with a warm welcome from Dr Jarina Peer, Program Coordinator & Lecturer in Special & Inclusive Education. The event featured two interactive sessions and a sharing session:

  • Nature Connections: Facilitated by Ding Kian Seng, this session engaged participants in using their five senses to connect with nature, promoting relaxation.
  • Band Together: Led by Jasmine Chan and assistants with special needs, this gentle exercise session aimed to enhance physical and mental well-being through simple movements.

During the Human Library segment, three “human books”— Tan Siew Ling, Ng Li Jie, and Mina Sunico-Chin — shared their personal journeys, offering invaluable insights into their challenges, triumphs, and perspectives. These lived experiences broke down barriers and fostered understanding, celebrating diversity and promoting deeper connections.

The Purple Parade Contingent March

On 12th October 2024, we proudly joined The Purple Parade Contingent March, transforming the streets of Suntec City into a vibrant sea of purple. Our contingent of 80 participants, including dedicated Newcastle Australia staff, SNIL members, MSIE students, and their families and friends, marched together to showcase our unwavering commitment to fostering inclusion, celebrating diversity, and building a strong, supportive community.

The day was filled with joy, unity, and a powerful message of acceptance and empowerment for all. Let’s continue to champion inclusion and make a difference together!
