Professor Abhishek Singh Bhati

The University of Newcastle in Australia has today (3 May) announced that Professor Abhishek Singh Bhati will be the new Chief Executive Officer and PVC of Newcastle Australia Institute of Higher Education (NAIHE). Professor Bhati will join NAIHE from his current role as Campus Dean of James Cook University’s Singapore campus, a role he has held since 2016.

As well as having extensive leadership experience, Professor Bhati is an active researcher, and has been published widely in the field of tourism. In particular, he is interested in technology and the role it has as a catalyst for tourism industry changes, low-carbon tourism for future sustainable development, and the need for tourism to deliver United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

“With a deep sense of enthusiasm and gratitude, I look forward to becoming a part of Newcastle’s dynamic community, where I can contribute to the University’s vision to be a world-leading university focusing on Looking Ahead, where one evolves continuously to embrace the opportunities through developing people and a creative culture for a better tomorrow for all,” Professor Bhati said.

“Singapore is one of Asia’s most advanced hubs for education, research and innovation. Having Professor Bhati join our team with such a wealth of knowledge of our sector and the region will be enormously valuable as we look to connect students and researchers with business and industry in the region and beyond,” Professor Kent Anderson, Chair of NAIHE Board, said.

“We have around 7,500 University of Newcastle alumni who call Singapore home and we continue to build strong links between our regions, despite more than 6,300 kilometres that separate us,” Professor Anderson said.

Professor Bhati will officially commence his role at NAIHE on 1 July 2024.
