Our Engineering students won 3rd Prize in National Engineers Day (NED) - Energy Innovation Challenge 2016

On 24 July 2016, our Engineering students in Singapore – Terence Tang Jia Wei, Thamiris Lorena De Souza, Shreeya Vashist, and Navendu Kumar Dubey secured the 3rd position in National Engineers Day (NED) – Energy Innovation Challenge 2016, held at HDB Hub Atrium, Singapore.

NED 2016 became the battle ground of 81 talented engineering teams of local and international students participating in the finals of the EIC 2016. EIC 2016 project teams displayed their innovative products demonstrating the use of an alternative energy source for public viewing and judging at the two-day NED fair.  The UON Singapore team was shortlisted from a total of 50 teams in the Stage 1 of EIC, two months ago. Twenty shortlisted teams then presented their products on 24th July under Singapore and international universities category.  The UON Singapore team was shortlisted as top 5  after rigorous evaluation by judges and was invited to give a 90 seconds presentation.   The team stood as 3rd Grand Winner and was honoured with EIC 2016 Trophy and a cheque of $3,000 at the awards and prizes presentation ceremony graced by Ms. Indranee Rajah, Senior Minister of State for Finance and Law.

To support a sustainable future and demonstrate use of alternative sources of energy, the UON Singapore project team developed a smart and sustainable biomass and solar powered cook stove (ECOTRACK) that also meets low power electricity requirements and monitors cooking emissions using low cost sensors.

Energy Innovation Challenge (EIC) was jointly organised by IES and Science Centre Singapore. The event is supported by the Ministry of Education (MOE), institutes of higher learning, National Research Foundation and other industry partners. This year, the international category received an overwhelming 50 submissions across the Asian region, with projects from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Taiwan.

Congratulations to the team of  talented and committed students, together with their mentor, Dr Hassan Ali (Academic Coordinator and Lecturer, Engineering) for making this mark in UON Singapore’s 10th Anniversary year.
