Meals-On-Wheels: The Simple Act of Showing Up

On the 23rd of September, 23 of us stepped away from our usual routines and took to the wheel (and some, the streets) to deliver dinner to homebound seniors through TOUCH Community Services’ Meals-On-Wheels initiative.

Some of us drove, while others made their way on foot. Regardless of the mode of transport, we shared the same purpose: making sure a meal reaches someone who may not be able to get one for themselves.

Meals-On-Wheels is an initiative that aims to provide meal delivery support to homebound seniors who may have difficulty buying or preparing their own food, or have little to no caregiver support.

While the task itself may seem simple, being on the ground gave our team a different perspective on the everyday challenges some seniors face. It was a reminder that access to something as basic as a meal cannot be taken for granted.

Whether travelling by car or walking from one delivery to the next, the experience was equally humbling for everyone. It showed us that care and empathy do not always require grand gestures. Sometimes, they can be found in the simplest acts — taking the time to deliver a meal, checking in on someone, or simply showing up.

Our Meals-On-Wheels volunteering experience was a meaningful reminder of the difference we can make when we come together and give our time to support others.

A meal may only take a moment to deliver, but the act of showing up can mean so much more.
