We collaborate with Institute of Public Relations of Singapore (IPRS) to launch Student Chapter

We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Institute of Public Relations of Singapore (IPRS) to launch a Student Chapter from the Bachelor of Communication (Major in Public Relations and Journalism).

This collaboration is the first-of-its-kind for IPRS with a University partner and the first formal event for UON Singapore this year. This MOU will witness UON Singapore setting up a chapter that will be run by students, with the aim of hosting two Public Relations-related activities a year. The purpose of the events is to help students studying public relations (PR),  bridge the gap between education and the working world.

The launch, held at the UON Singapore’s partner’s premise  –  PSB Academy, was attended by close to 40 students from the Bachelor of Communication programme as well as members of the IPRS council. The MOU was signed by UON Singapore’s Pro Vice-Chancellor and CEO, Professor Amir Mahmood and Mr Robert Conceicao, President of the IPRS Council.

For Professor Amir, the MOU represents a way for UON Singapore to “further expand and deepen our relationship with IPRS”.

“I think the MOU gives us an angle, so that our collective efforts, our activities, are under an umbrella,” he said.

“It provide us, I would say, a very systematic way of pulling our resources and undertaking activities that would help us to achieve our set and desired objectives… it also gives us an institutional setting that we are not working in a very ad-hoc way.”

He also added that it will be the students who will benefit most from this partnership, something that Mr Conceicao agreed with.

“We are providing you a platform, but we want your incoming student council members to come up with ideas, think out of the box… I’m hoping to see initiatives from them,” Mr Conceicao said.

“All the MOU specify is that the UON [student] chapter must do a minimum of two activities a year. It can be anything; it’s up to the chapter.

“If you (students) need support from the IPRS, just tell me what support you need and we will definitely help.”

Professor Amir Mahmood, UON Singapore Pro Vice-Chancellor and CEO, on the benefits of the MOU:

“It also gives an opportunity to our students to be exposed to IPRS sponsored events. It helps them to get into internships; so really, it provides them, our students, a rich experience. I think we are very fortunate to have the MOU signed.”

Mr Robert Conceicao’s advice to budding PR Practitioners:

“Take your time in finding out what you really want. I think now, it has become so niche and specialised. You have to realise what you want, so my first advice to [aspiring PR practitioners] is to know yourself, know your strengths and weaknesses. The second is that there are no shortcuts. The third is to work hard.”
