Purpose Powers a Lifetime of Teaching

The Japanese concept of ikigai has gained significant global recognition for its power to enrich one’s life with purpose and joy. Ikigai—a blend of the words iki (life) and gai (value)—represents the sweet spot where passion, skills, societal needs, and financial sustainability intersect. Héctor Garcia, co-author of Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life, highlights how identifying one’s ikigai can transform one’s life, fostering both mental and physical well-being.

This concept of ikigai is beautifully exemplified in the career of Jane Hayes, Senior School Librarian at Dulwich College, Singapore. With nearly 50 years of dedication to education, Jane’s professional journey is a testament to how pursuing a meaningful purpose can bring personal fulfilment while also making a significant impact on the lives of others. Her story reflects the essence of ikigai, showing how a career driven by passion and purpose can lead to a lifetime of joy and contribution.

A Passionate Path in Education

Jane’s journey into the field of education was inspired by her own experiences with exceptional teachers. Despite her parents’ initial aspirations for her to become a chemist or pharmacist, Jane felt drawn to the world of education. “I knew that those fields weren’t for me,” Jane recalls. “My heart was in teaching, where I could make a real difference.”

After spending 13 years as a teacher, Jane had the opportunity to pursue a postgraduate diploma that allowed her to become a teaching librarian—a role that perfectly merged her passion for education with her love for books and information. “It was a challenging transition,” she admits, “but it was one that aligned perfectly with my passion and what I believed I could offer to students”. Jane’s commitment to personal and professional growth is a cornerstone of her career. “I always seek something further or outside of my comfort zone,” she explains. “This mindset has kept me engaged and in the ‘growth zone’ throughout my career”.

Her career has taken her across the globe, from the University of Newcastle, Australia to Abu Dhabi, United States of America, and now Singapore. Every role has presented its own unique set of challenges and rewards for her, but Jane’s steadfast commitment to her profession has been the constant driving force throughout her journey.

Embracing the Change and Challenges

Throughout her extensive career, Jane has witnessed significant shifts in educational practices. From traditional methods to the modern emphasis on inquiry-based learning, Jane has embraced these changes with enthusiasm. “Education is constantly evolving,” she notes, “and it’s important to adapt and stay current with the latest trends and technologies”.

One of the biggest changes Jane has experienced is the integration of technology into education. She was one of the early adopters, recognising the potential of digital tools to enhance learning. “My first experience with a computer in the classroom was in the early 80s’ with the Commodore 64 computer which provided me with an insight into how technology could revolutionise the way we teach and learn,” she says. “I’ve always believed in staying ahead of the curve, especially when it comes to integrating technology into education”.

However, this adaptability has not come without its challenges. Jane recalls her first year of teaching as particularly difficult — a “baptism of fire,” as she describes it. “That first year was tough,” she reflects. “It’s one thing to study teaching theory, but it’s entirely different to put it into practice in a classroom full of students. The workload has only increased with the introduction of communication platforms, but these tools also allow for greater connectivity and collaboration, which is a positive aspect”.

Despite the challenges, Jane finds immense satisfaction in her work with students. Over the years, she has taught a wide range of age groups, from young children to teenagers, and each group brings its own rewards. “Working with teenagers keeps me feeling young,” she highlights. “It’s a joy to stay connected with pop culture and trends through them”.

Jane also believes that the most rewarding successes in education are often the ones that aren’t immediately apparent. “The true successes are those with substance and meaning,” she says. “They often only reveal themselves in hindsight, but they’re the ones that make all the difference”.

Words of Wisdom for Educators

With nearly five decades of experience in education, Jane offers valuable advice for newcomers to the profession. She emphasises the importance of persistence, stating, “Teaching is not easy, but if you’re truly passionate about it, you’ll hang in there. Always keep your students at the heart of everything you do and don’t hesitate to collaborate with other teachers. Reach out for help when you need it”.

As Teacher’s Day approaches, Jane offers a reflective perspective on the occasion’s significance. “I believe this day is incredibly important,” she states. “Teacher’s Day sends a powerful message of public recognition and highlights the intrinsic value of educators. It’s a crucial reminder of the deep respect and appreciation that teachers rightfully deserve”. Her thoughtful reflection reinforces the importance of celebrating educators who embody the essence of their vocation, providing not only education but also inspiration and support.

Jane Hayes’ extraordinary career and her decades of dedication to education and her ability to adapt and thrive amid challenges reflect a profound commitment to her purpose. Jane’s story is a powerful reminder of how pursuing one’s ikigai can lead to a deeply fulfilling and impactful life. As we celebrate Teacher’s Day, Jane’s journey reminds us of the importance of recognising and honouring educators who, like her, dedicate their lives to turn passion into purposeful and meaningful impact.
