From Both Sides of the Desk: A Shared Journey Through MBP

Brennan Tay savours his mornings with a cup of Yuan Yang. He is also a true food lover who can’t just pick a favourite dish. In contrast, Dr. Shanu Rekha prefers a quiet start to her day with no caffeine. When it comes to food, spice is the name of the game, and she loves it in every meal. Despite the differences, they have a few things in common. Both of them prefer mornings over nights and texting over calling—and have a similar drive for self-improvement.

Their commonalities don’t end there. They share one more—the Master of Business Psychology (MBP) program. Dr. Shanu and Brennan walk the same halls of Newcastle Australia Institute of Higher Education. But where Dr. Shanu stands at the front of the classroom, Brennan sits across her desk as a student. They come together to reveal how they navigate their respective roles and how learning is founded upon self-reflection.

Teaching with Intention

Dr. Shanu Rekha is no stranger to the world of education. Teaching is in her DNA—a legacy passed down from her grandmother to her mother, and now to her. Though it’s a family tradition, Dr. Shanu does it in very modern ways.

Deeply conscious of diverse learning styles in the classroom, Dr. Shanu uses various tools like Kahoot, Padlet, and role-playing activities. “It is crucial that these are taken into account when lecturing, to enable the students to apply what they learn,” she explains. Her considerations deliver results in abundance—her students are always eager to engage and learn.

Beyond teaching, Dr. Shanu’s work also involves course design. People might think it’s all about content delivery, but it actually involves a lot of self-reflection and self-application. Her students’ concerns are her concerns—so when they come to her, she makes sure to carefully incorporate their feedback into her lectures. She meticulously tweaks her course content to meet changing requirements and support all learning abilities in her classroom.

To Dr. Shanu, teaching isn’t just about giving answers but empowering students to find their own—something that means the world to her. Although searching for ways to help students can be challenging and time-consuming, it’s a worthwhile endeavour. Seeing students improve their communication with psychological frameworks from her classes fills Dr. Shanu with pride and determination. The time and effort she poured into each module has paid off over and over again.

While Dr. Shanu crafts her lessons, a student equally committed to growth sits in her classroom.

Balancing the Books

Brennan Tay is not just a finance manager—he’s also a student at Newcastle Australia. A few years ago, he decided he wanted to become a better leader, manager, and team player at work, so he started looking for postgraduate degrees. During his search, he came across the Master of Business Psychology, and the rest was history.

Juggling work, life, and studying is no small feat—but Brennan takes on the challenge with great determination. He carves out the time for studying after work, during his lunch break, and on the weekends. His enthusiasm is bolstered by how his lecturers are very accommodating, granting him extensions when he needs them most.

Despite these obstacles, Brennan relishes his time as a student at Newcastle Australia. He’s surrounded by approachable staff and supportive classmates who make him feel seen, valued, and heard. As a fan of collaborative learning, he delights in how the program incorporates mixed teaching methods.

Sudden life events and having to travel for work can throw a wrench in Brennan’s schedule at times. But the program is flexible—it gives him the option of online learning, something that he really appreciates. “It allows me to have peace of mind to attend to these very important familial or social matters,” he explains.

A Meeting of Minds

Brennan loves a challenge, and he rises to the occasion every single time. Dr. Shanu’s group assignments pull him out of his comfort zone, inspiring better collaboration between him and his classmates. His attentiveness and willingness to dive into discussions breathe life into Dr. Shanu’s classroom—something that she deeply appreciates. Their synergy is what creates a better learning environment for everyone.

In general, their academic interests differ—Dr. Shanu takes to teaching all modules with gusto, while Brennan is intrigued by foundational concepts. Yet, they share remarkably similar philosophies on learning.

Between them lies a deep respect for credible sources and critical thinking. Brennan approaches his work like a detective, combing through university or academic websites, catching errors, and asking questions to uncover deeper meanings. Meanwhile, Dr. Shanu cultivates intellectual rigour combined with introspection. Beyond using recent references and Turnitin, she nudges students towards mindfulness, encouraging them to reflect upon personal biases.

Equally fascinated by how internal motivation, resilience, and conflict resolution can improve lives, both Dr. Shanu and Brennan strive to be a guiding light for those around them.

“This journey of awakening (among students) is what resonates with my motivation to continue teaching, ” Dr. Shanu says. Brennan echoes her sentiments in his own words, “To encourage, support, and motivate others to be committed to shared organisation goals and to overcome challenges, that is what drives me at any workplace.”

In a classroom filled with diversity, Dr. Shanu and Brennan value listening to different perspectives and self-reflection for personal growth. As Dr. Shanu puts it, “We are all learning, so being open is the best way to move forward.” Brennan has similar words of encouragement for everyone: “Always be open to learning and discovering something each day.”

Past The Program

Graduation is the fork in the road where Dr. Shanu and Brennan’s paths will soon diverge, with both of them turning the page to new ventures. Brennan is already considering more cross-functional roles in senior management, eager to put his learnings into practice. And if an opportunity for a doctorate arises, he’s not averse to it. On the other hand, innovation and research doesn’t stop for Dr. Shanu. She has dived into a new research direction—exploring corporate social responsibility in education. As they embark on different journeys, they continue carrying their drive for growth and uplifting others.

Brennan looks back on his time at Newcastle Australia fondly. It equipped him with the right tools and insights for the future—and helped him truly understand how people communicate and grow within organisations.

For those interested in taking this program, Dr. Shanu says, “Come armed with questions, this is the best way to learn.”
