Celebrating Father Figures: Beyond Blood Ties

Father’s Day is customarily seen as an occasion to celebrate fathers and their significant contribution to family life. Yet, in a constantly changing and diversifying society, this celebration surpasses traditional family boundaries to include all father figures—stepfathers, single fathers, and even mentors. These people capture the spirit of fatherhood through their guidance and encouragement, amongst other redeeming qualities. One such person is Norazman Ab Hamid, also known as Norman, a career advisor whose impact reaches well beyond his own two daughters, influencing the lives of numerous students and individuals.

First and Foremost, A Father To His Own

At home, Norman is a dedicated father to his two daughters, aged 21 and 18. Balancing a full-time job with family responsibilities, Norman’s approach to fatherhood is both nurturing and supportive, providing a stable foundation for his children. He says:

“Fatherhood means always protecting your child and ensuring their safety. We give them freedom but also remain attuned to their emotions and needs.”

Norman places great emphasis on fostering an environment that encourages self-discovery and open communication with his daughters. Serving as a pillar of unconditional love and support, he stands by his eldest as she explores the intricacies of early adulthood, while also nurturing his youngest daughter’s aspiration to carry on the family’s legacy of education, motivated by Norman and his sister, who are both teachers.

Norman and his daughters all have a love for music and the arts, often bonding over their shared interests. Despite their busy schedules, they always make time for family, especially over a good meal. During the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, Norman took on the role of house chef, cooking hearty meals for his family. Now that life is returning to normal and their schedules are busier, they still find ways to take care of each other, often bringing food home to share.

From Family Patriarch to Career Mentor

Norman’s commitment to mentorship extends far beyond his family circle as he also works on guiding students at Republic Polytechnic. Overseeing career advisory services for eight schools, Norman’s influence reverberates across various educational institutions.

Recognised and accredited globally for his expertise, Norman’s approach blends group coaching and counselling, providing crucial support to students navigating their career journeys. For more complex issues, he offers personalised one-to-one sessions, tailoring his advice to individual needs.

Throughout his career, Norman draws on his experience in the social service sector, where he led initiatives promoting workplace inclusivity and assisting persons with disabilities (PWDs) in accessing employment opportunities. Reflecting on this phase, Norman emphasises, “My work with individuals with disabilities highlighted the significance of fostering inclusive environments where everyone feels valued. It involves dismantling barriers and cultivating a culture of acceptance and respect.”

Furthermore, Norman provided support to individuals transitioning back into society post-incarceration. Guiding them through the challenges of overcoming stigma, he facilitated their reintegration and empowered them to forge a new path. He remarks, “It’s incredibly rewarding to see individuals reclaim their lives and break free from the stigma of incarceration. Hearing their stories of transformation fills me with a sense of purpose and reaffirms the importance of second chances.”

Breaking Down Barriers in Mentorship

Just as there is no handbook for being the perfect father, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to effective mentorship. Recognising that it requires a deep understanding of diverse needs, Norman has pursued a Master of Special and Inclusive Education at Newcastle Australia Institute of Higher Education (NAIHE) – empowering him to support students from all backgrounds and circumstances.

Through this specialised degree, Norman has gained crucial insights into different disabilities, learning styles, and policy frameworks. This knowledge allows him to create truly inclusive counselling, identifying and addressing the unique challenges faced by each student. Whether guiding them through academic hurdles, career transitions, or personal obstacles, Norman draws on his expanded expertise to provide the tailored support they need to thrive.

In many ways, Norman’s journey mirrors the evolution of fatherhood itself – transitioning from a family-centred role to one that embraces a broader community. Just as a father’s wisdom and care can extend beyond his own children, Norman’s mentorship extends further to individual students, impacting entire educational institutions and cultivating a more inclusive future.

Embracing Fatherhood in All Its Forms

As Father’s Day draws near, it is an opportune time to extend appreciation not just to fathers who play that traditional role well, but to all those who embody fatherhood in various roles. Whether as a dedicated dad to his daughters or as a transformative mentor to his students, Norman exemplifies the multifaceted nature of fatherhood.

“Fathers, your unwavering love and tireless efforts for your families are incredible, even if you don’t always express it openly,” he asserts. These words capture a profound truth – that fatherhood cuts across genetics, taking root in the selfless guidance and steadfast support that nurtures the growth of younger generations, be they one’s own children or mentees.

Norman’s journey with the Master of Special and Inclusive Education has empowered him to break down barriers, cultivating inclusive mentorship that uplifts individuals from all backgrounds and circumstances. This speaks to the expansive vision of fatherhood society must embrace – one that celebrates the mentors, role models, and father-like presences who enrich our lives in immeasurable ways.
