He also stressed the importance of personalized learning programs and sustained investment in teachers to keep them motivated and retain them.

Education is the key to unlocking opportunities and achieving social mobility. In collaboration with the Singapore International Chamber of Commerce (SICC), we were honored to hold a breakfast talk on the topic of “Reimagining the Future of Special Needs Education in an Uncertain World” at Raffles City Convention Centre on 16 February 2023.

In his speech at the recent Singapore Perspectives 2023 Conference, Education Minister Chan Chun Sing highlighted five key focus areas to keep the education system relevant in an uncertain world. Taking inspiration from the Minister’s speech, Guest Speaker Dr. Carl Leonard, who is also the Co-convenor for Master of Special and Inclusive Education at University of Newcastle Australia, highlighted the importance of providing a multi-dimensional model of support for special needs students. He shared that the early years of a child’s life are critical and personalised learning programs can help narrow learning gaps and enable progress with flexible curriculum delivery. He stressed the need for sustained investment in teachers, including liberating them from administrative tasks, to keep them motivated and retain them.

Close to 60 participants attended the event, including many educationalists and businesspeople. An engaging dialogue was held following Dr. Carl’s talk and it was moderated by Mr. Victor Mills, Chief Executive, SICC

One of the highlights of the event was the introduction of our Master of Special and Inclusive Education to the panel. Dr. Carl shared about how the program is designed to equip educators and professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to support students with special needs in a variety of settings.

The Master of Special and Inclusive Education is a timely initiative, given the growing demand for professionals who can support students with special needs. The program is also aligned with the Singapore government’s efforts to promote inclusive education and provide equal opportunities for all students, regardless their abilities.

Our program is open to educators, allied health professionals, and other professionals who work with children with special needs. It is offered on a part-time basis, allowing students to balance their work and study commitments.
